Hillsborough Whole-Home

A large house that had been decorated in pieces over twenty years. Our task was to make it read as one building again.

Luxury living room with linen sectional and stone fireplace
Size
7,400 sq ft
Scope
Whole-home design, furnishing, management
Duration
16 months
Rooms
Fourteen

The brief

  • Unify twenty years of piecemeal decoration into a single coherent language.
  • Keep the family living in the house throughout the works.
  • Retain and re-home the pieces they genuinely loved.

The approach

01

One palette, room by room

A five-material palette was set at the start and applied to every room, so each phase joined the last seamlessly.

02

Phased by floor

Work moved floor by floor, with a clean, liveable boundary at every stage.

03

Edit before buying

We catalogued existing furniture first; a third of it was restored and kept, which funded better new pieces elsewhere.

04

Lighting as the connector

A single lighting language — warm, layered, dimmed low — ties rooms of very different scale together.

Renderings

Five views of the finished design.

Living room with stone fireplace and linen seating
Living — the palette is set here and repeated everywhere.
Formal dining room with long oak table
Dining — one long table, one sculptural light.
Home library with floor-to-ceiling shelving
Library — the darkest, warmest room in the plan.
Entry hall with curved stair and artwork
Entry — recut to give the art room to breathe.
Family room with built-in oak media wall
Family room — built-ins absorb everyday life.

Materials

  • Limewash plaster
  • Oak flooring
  • Linen and wool
  • Limestone
  • Antique brass

The outcome

  • Fourteen rooms delivered across sixteen months with the family in residence.
  • A third of the existing furniture restored rather than replaced.
  • The house now reads as one design rather than twenty years of layers.

Guests can't tell which rooms are new. That was exactly the point.
