Los Altos Primary Bath

The brief was one sentence: make it the quietest room in the house. Everything else followed from that.

Luxury primary bathroom with freestanding stone tub under a window
Size
260 sq ft
Scope
Design + build management
Duration
5 months
Accessibility
Step-free throughout

The brief

  • Replace a compartmented 1990s layout with one open, calm room.
  • Bring daylight into a space with only one exterior window.
  • Design for ageing in place without it reading as an accessible bathroom.

The approach

01

One material, three finishes

A single limestone runs as floor, vanity top and shower bench in honed, brushed and split finishes.

02

Light from above

A new skylight over the wet room doubles the daylight without adding a window to the elevation.

03

Flush thresholds

A linear drain and level floor make the shower step-free — which also makes the room feel larger.

04

Storage that stays dry

The oak vanity is set clear of the wet zone with concealed drawers for daily items.

Materials

  • Honed limestone
  • Micro-cement
  • Rift oak vanity
  • Frameless glass
  • Brushed nickel

The outcome

  • Delivered in five months with no schedule slip.
  • Fully step-free and future-proofed without any clinical detailing.
  • The room is used morning and evening as intended — slowly.

It's the only room in the house where nobody is in a hurry.
